On 12/23/00, Lisa and I went to the Upper Township Animal Shelter, after receiving word that a breeder in the area had passed away, and left behind 102 ferrets. Here is our day today in photos:
The shelter, from the outside. We had no idea what was waiting inside for us.

They had the 102 ferrets separated into 3 rooms/dog runs. It was overwhelming how many ferrets there really were. They were mostly all not spayed or neutered, and in horrible condition.

Many of the jills (female ferrets) were in raging heat, not to mention filthy and unkept, and scared to death.. |
The boys weren't much better, with many suffering from testicular tumors.
And adrenal disease was prevalant in many of the older ferrets. As were cataracts.

This poor boy is supposed to be a silver. He's filthy, and scared, and elderly

Here are some more shots of these poor kids. They were so scared.
This is the one that got me crying. He's a whole hob, and he's about 7. He has the beginnings of adrenal disease and has insulinoma. He was FILTHY. He also has testicular cancer. He's here now, and looks much better now after a bath and a nail trim (those nails that weren't ripped out, that is). He has bite wounds all over his body, and despite all this, he's still a friendly, sweet old man.
More sad, scared kids.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Packed up and ready to go home for baths and love. |
Here are much happier photos of the fifteen ferrets our shelter took in: Shiny Happy Weasels.
All the ferrets here, except for one, have been adopted. We thank you all very much. This was an experience, that's for sure.
All of the ferrets were spayed, neutered, vaccinated and tested (negative all around) for ADV. With the support of the ferret community, we were able to give the fifteen ferrets our shelter took in a wonderful holiday. Thank you all for helping.
